On August 16, 1750, somewhere between Port Lajoie (what is now Charlottetown) and Baie Verte, a ship full of French supplies on its way to the Acadian colonies was captured by two English ships. Captain Jacques Jalin is taken prisoner, the ship is seized, then sold, and all papers on the French ship are confiscated. According to Officer Bigot, Captain Jalin didn’t have the presence of mind to throw his papers or letters overboard.
And this is how 38 exceptional documents, all testaments of a stormy historical period, have survived the test of time. Travel back to 1750 with us, to French America, and discover the language of these men and women through two of these documents that have survived thanks to the London odyssey.
